Why we stopped calling
Nothing went wrong with you. The phone changed underneath us.
Calling a friend for no reason used to be normal. Now it feels like a thing. That shift is not about you getting busy or growing apart. It is about where the phone lives.
When the phone hung on the wall
- A call was the only way to reach someone.
- There was no texting, so the small stuff waited for a call.
- The phone stayed home. Calling was not barging in, it was just how you talked.
Now it is in everyone's pocket
- Your friend has their phone on them every waking minute.
- A call could land in a meeting, a nap, the middle of dinner. You cannot see.
- Texting handles all the small stuff, so a call is not for small stuff anymore.
So a ringing phone started to mean something is wrong. Nobody wants to be the call that makes a friend's stomach drop, so we save it for emergencies. And because calls are for emergencies, an ordinary call feels even stranger to make.
Round and round it goes, until you land somewhere nobody chose: you either schedule a call like a work meeting, or you never make it at all.
The fix is small
Wait for the green light, then just call.
Office Hours is one quiet signal. When a friend has a few minutes and would not mind catching up, they flip it on. The handful of people in their Crew see that they are free.
You are not guessing whether you are interrupting, because you are answering an open door. No calendars, no scheduling, no big production. It slots into the gaps in your day.
